Artist's Description

"What the woman who labors wants is the right to live, not simply exist - the right to life as the rich woman has the right to life, and the sun and music and art. You have nothing that the humblest workers has not a right to have also. The worker must have bread, but she must have roses too."

This quote from feminist labor leader Rose Schneiderman inspired the rallying cry (and song) of "Bread and Roses."

About Ricardo Levins Morales

Ricardo Levins Morales

I was born in the coffee growing mountains of western Puerto Rico and moved to the US at a time of great social upheaval. My art has grown up inseparable entwined with my activism and sense of community. Art, to me, is a collection of medicinal herbs and nutrients that can help individuals, communities and societies overcome the cultural toxins that keep them from making needed changes. I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where I work out of a storefront studio. I live in close relationship with the social movements, organizers and activists who inspire my work. Additional posters, notecards and buttons are available at my studio web store at www.rlmartstudio.com. You are welcome to browse both locations.
